Project Spotlight: Full Garden Redesign & 3-Tiered Transformation at Haughley House, Somerby
When major property upgrades disrupt an existing outdoor space, it presents a unique opportunity to reimators, rethink functionality, and build something exceptional. That was precisely the case at Haughley House in Somerby, Rutland.

Following extensive utility installations at the property—including new air source heat pumps, 3-phase electric mains, and an underground rainwater harvester system—the original driveway and patio layout were left heavily disrupted. Rather than simply restoring the old surfaces, the homeowners chose to undertake a complete, high-end garden transformation.
Working in close partnership with Rutland Garden Design, C Allen Groundworks & Landscaping brought this ambitious multi-tiered vision from initial structural excavation to seamless, finished completion.
The Brief: Structural Groundworks Meets Outdoor Luxury
The vision for Haughley House went beyond standard landscaping; it required complex ground engineering paired with refined design details. The goal was to transform a disrupted plot into a cohesive, highly usable garden featuring dedicated zones for dining, relaxation, and family recreation—all while complementing the classic aesthetic of the Rutland countryside.
Behind the Build: Utility Integration & Heavy Excavation
Every lasting garden redesign starts beneath the surface. To support the property’s new eco-infrastructure, our team handled the deep structural preparation:
Underground Ducting & Drainage: Installing cable pathways and ducting for the new 3-phase electrics and air source heat pumps, alongside drainage connected to the rainwater harvesting tank.
Precision Excavation: Sculpting the sloping plot into three distinct, level tiers to maximise usable outdoor space.
Engineered Footings: Pouring solid concrete footings to support the new retaining walls defining each level.
Craftsmanship & Zoning: Stone Retaining Walls & 3-Tier Patios
Working alongside Rutland Garden Design, we used traditional ironstone walling to tie the new layout seamlessly into the Rutland local aesthetic.
Upper Dining Patio: Designed for outdoor hosting and family meals, flowing directly from the main living area.
Middle Sun Terrace: Positioned to catch the best daytime sunlight—a quiet, tranquil spot for relaxation.
Lower Leisure Tier: A dedicated space housing a private hot tub area while providing a safe, flat zone for children to play.
The Finished Result: A Cohesive Rutland Sanctuary
The completion of Haughley House highlights what can be achieved when expert design and precision groundworks align. By addressing structural needs—such as heavy utility integration and ground retention— alongside aesthetic goals, the garden was transformed from a disrupted work site into a stunning, functional landscape built to last for decades.
