Project Spotlight: Overcoming a 2-Metre Drop with a Bespoke Raised Patio in Ridlington

There is nothing quite like the rolling Rutland countryside views, and when the owners of Jubilee Lodge in Ridlington planned their stunning new oak-framed extension, maximising that view was right at the top of the wish list. Our friends over at Generation Timber did an incredible job framing the view, leading the project build and installing expansive bi-fold doors that flood the new living space with natural light.
Bringing that vision down to earth presented a significant structural challenge.The finished floor level of the new extension sat exactly two metres above the natural level of the garden. To make the space truly liveable, the clients needed a seamless transition—a patio area where they could sit outside directly from the bi-fold doors, take in the scenery, and safely step down into a newly transformed lawned area without losing the openness of the landscape.
The Collaboration: Designing the Perfect Level Change
Solving a steep level change requires a perfect blend of creative design and robust engineering. We worked closely alongside Nicola at Rutland Garden Design, who drew up a brilliant layout to soften the transition while keeping the focus on the panoramic backdrop. A substantial, multi-level raised patio terrace that acts as a natural extension of the architecture.
To ensure the new structure looked like it had always been there, we matched the retaining brickwork to the existing red-brick masonry of the main house. Careful ground preparation, proper drainage routing, and solid footings were put in place to guarantee the terrace remains perfectly stable for decades to come.
Crafting the Details: Stone, Brick, and Glass
Once the primary groundworks and structural brickwork were complete, we laid a smooth natural stone paving surface across the expansive terrace. The light tones of the stone bounce the daylight beautifully, creating a bright, welcoming outdoor living area perfectly proportioned for outdoor dining and relaxing.
To overcome the safety requirements of the two-metre drop without blockading the beautiful country views, we installed a minimalist post-and-glass balustrade system along the perimeter. This provides a secure barrier that keeps the view unobstructed whether you’re sitting inside the oak extension or relaxing on the terrace. Brick steps were crafted to lead down gradually to the fresh, level lawn below, neatly flanked by integrated brick planters that will eventually overflow with seasonal greenery, softening the hard landscaping into the wider garden design.
