What a fantastic experience at the Rutland Flower Show! Bringing a custom show garden from Rutland Garden Design's initial sketches to a finished landscape at the Rutland Showground was a real highlight of the year for the team.
At C Allen Groundworks & Landscaping, we take immense pride in setting the solid foundations that make outdoor spaces both beautiful and durable. Behind the Scenes: Building a Show Garden Against the Clock
Building a garden for a show is a completely different beast to a standard domestic build. Where a residential project unfolds over a few weeks, a show garden demands precision, hard work, and seamless coordination in just a matter of days.
Groundworks & Excavation: Every great garden starts beneath the surface. We prepped the sub-base and drainage early on to ensure the paving and heavy structures sat level and secure.
Hardscaping & Structural Features: We laid clean paving pathways, built raised borders, and positioned structural elements to give the garden its backbone and clean lines.
Soft Landscaping: Working alongside Rutland Garden Design, lush planting, ornamental grasses, and subtle water features were added to soften the stone and bring the whole space to life.

Chatting with everyone who popped past the stand was easily the best part of the event. If you are starting to think about updating your own garden this year, here are three simple principles from our show build to keep in mind:
Get the groundworks right first: A beautiful patio or porcelain paving slab is only as good as the sub-base underneath it. Proper site clearance, excavation, and drainage prevent settling and costly cracks down the line.
Balance hard and soft landscaping: Smooth stone paving and timber decking look their best when offset by warm planting beds, lawn turf, or rustic metal features.
